Wellness Weeks

Together supporting New Zealand’s first responders.

Te Kiwi Māia delivers 2-3 ‘Wellness Retreat Weeks’ per year at selected locations in the North and South Islands. We provide respite, recovery and rehabilitation over a six-day programme to 12 first responders/defence personnel through the provision of a variety of services. Our current programme is focused on stress and burnout, and provides the following services based on an overall holistic approach to support: psychological support (focusing on stress, burnout, self-care, depression, trauma, skills, goals and coping tools), traditional Māori healing (rongoā) which can include massage (mirimiri) and talk/prayer (korero/karakia) practices - which emphasises the spiritual dimension (wairua) of health, trauma yoga (daily), physical training (daily), sleep hygiene and nutrition training, and lived-experience guest speakers. Post-care is also important to us, which is why we complete check-ins at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months post-Wellness Week.

Te Kiwi Māia's mission, vision, goals and aspirations are formed around the values of Te Whare Tapa Whā (a model that represents health and wellbeing). Through experiential and instructional activities, we seek to provide the tools for adopting a practice of physiological and psychological awareness through the connection of mind-body-breath-nature. The programme is formed around the values of Te Whare Tapa Whā and practices of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); designed in collaboration with Massey University, New Zealand Defence Force, and Te Kiwi Māia Māori Cultural Advisors, and Psychological Health Advisors. Activities are led by selected specialist service providers and delivered onsite at the retreat.

The benefits, outcomes and outputs of the Wellness Weeks include happier and healthier NZ Defence Force personnel and first responders, contributing towards a more resilient, effective and high-functioning military and emergency response workforce. TKM Wellness Weeks provide a safe and inclusive space for participants to rest, recover and rejuvenate, to allow them to better serve and perform their roles, not only in uniform, but also at home.
